The uncomfortable weight on his legs made Zack crack open an eyelid. It was Meggie, sitting on top of his lower legs, holding a suspicious-looking package and grinning rather infuriatingly. Zack decided he'd go back to sleep again.
"What's wrong, big bro? Don't want your birthday gift?"
"It's six months past my birthday, Meg."
"Okay, a get-well gift then." She poked him rather painfully in the nose.
"Fine, fine, I'm up." With a slight groan and a glare designed to shatter the nerve of the toughest bully--which didn't work against his sister--Zack tore open the gift rather clumsily. It was a CD of Dream Theater, one of his favorite rock bands. "What's this for?" he thought aloud, looking up and seeing his parents standing with Jess away from his bed.
"Well, we thought you looked a bit sad yesterday..." Marissa began.
"No, it's because you are not going to believe what happened to you," Jess said absentmindedly. She was looking out the window and seemed...oddly disinterested.
Zack checked the clock. It was only 6:30am. "Did it have to be this early?!"
"Jess and Meggie wanted to see you before school, of course," Taylor explained. He gave Jessie a weird look and continued. "You had a concussion and you were pretty woozy yesterday, but I think you're okay now. The doctor just says you need a lot of rest, as in--"
"--as in not moving at all today." That was Meggie. "Which means I get to feed you cookies that I baked!"
"No!" Zack sat up, scattering pillows and sisters. "That can't possibly be--"
"I thought you said you loved my cookies!"
"No, I mean, I have somewhere to go to meet someone, I mean, not meet meet as in something bad or anything, but--just--ARGHH--" Realizing he wouldn't get any positive response out of his family's blank looks, Zack got up and got dressed in his hotel room's bathroom.
"That was weird," Jess said dryly. "I hope he won't be this odd at home."
"He'll be all right," Marissa said gently, thinking of how thankful she was that her son was all right. "Rest will make him all right."
