BRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With every ounce of willpower he had, Zack yanked his head up from its just-right spot in between the pillows and yelled as loud as he could.
"JEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
He dropped back down on the bed and groaned, absentmindedly noting the screams of the rest of his family as they were awakened just as he had been--by the fantastically loud and annoying alarm clock of Jessica Alejo. It didn't help that everyone's doors and windows were open, too. He knew it had to be worse for his parents and sister; Meg actually shared a room with the terrible contraption and Mr. and Mrs. Alejo's room was right beside the girls'.
With an exasperated grunt he flipped onto his stomach and looked at the clock. It was 6:45am, for goodness's sake, and his shift at the Flair Nightclub was at 4:00pm! Making a mental note to put something cold and sticky in his sister's bed later on, Zack got up and dressed.
A few walls away, Meg screamed as shrilly as she could at the very top of her lungs and, seeing there was no effect on her sleeping sister, bonked her sister with a pillow. It made a satisfying "WHAM!", and Meg ignored Jess's moans of "The pain! The agony!"; she was too busy trying to go to sleep again for the 15 minutes she had left.
"What the heck did you do that for?!" Jessica shouted, her voice muffled by the blankets she was cocooned in.
"Your stinking alarm woke us all up, sis," Meg snarled, giving up on sleep for once. Jess only sniffed, ignorant of just how excruciatingly startling her new alarm was.
"How come I didn't hear it, then?"
"I don't know! It must have woken up every house within a mile of this place, but you slept through it like a... like a..." Meg stopped talking as she saw her older sister beginning to fall asleep again. "Oh, no you don't!"
Five minutes later the two of them emerged from their shared bedroom, Jess sleepily carrying a hopping mad Meggie under her arm. Zack was fully dressed, fully awake, and fully cheerful, which seemed to annoy his 16-year-old younger sister. She dropped Meg and ignored him, checking her sleek brown braid of hair in the foyer mirror before going to the breakfast table.
Marissa Alejo turned around and greeted her daughters. "Cereal or toast?"
"Both," the two sighed, plopping into empty chairs. Taylor laughed at something in the Briarstone News, and the day began for the Alejos.
Of course, they had no idea that precisely 2 minutes and 37 seconds later, Jessie and Meg would almost miss the bus and have to run after it for a while before Jess lost her temper and aimed a kick at it... then Zack would accidentally drive into the beech tree beside the house, crippling the poor thing for life... but hey! A good breakfast gives you strength for the day, no matter how nerve-wracking it may turn out to be.
