"...And so I really do think there'll be a school play. I mean, it's going to be pretty cool seeing you up there, Meggie."
Jess walked with her sister as the two of them approached their lockers and took out some books. Meg blushed deeply, but tossed her head.
"I don't think I'll try out yet. I mean, there are probably really great kids who act here." Meg shrugged slightly, knowing her sister wasn't convinced. "It was better back home, because everyone else--including me--knew that I was the best, and I didn't sound like I was bragging anymore because everyone knew I was used to it."
"That's stupid. Of course you're still the best, how could there be anyone better?! You've just got to show them what you've got, and then everyone will be humbled into awed silence and you can go on and play the lead role, whatever that is." Grinning down at her sis, Jess checked her schedule--first subject was Health. Ugh.
"You never know, Jess." Thinking wistfully of Karmen, seeing her singing her heart out with total joy across that playground, Meg knew she'd never stand a chance if the play was a musical. She had an okay voice, but it wasn't really her thing. Sure, back home there had been musicals and she had still gotten good parts, even though they weren't the leading roles, but Meggie somehow suspected that if there was a great singer like Karmen out here, there was a great actress too.
Jess shook her head. "Oh well, we don't even know when this school play is anyway. Back home it was always after the first term, but here it may be different." The two parted ways at Meg's classroom, which was Geography. "Bye, sis."
