She laughed. "It's okay, Kathy, I just had to get that out of my brother first." Taking another bite out of the almost-forgotten candy bar, she grinned at her friend, looking from the door to Zack to the door again. "Zack, Candi might come in any moment now and you know it."
"Yeah." He smiled at Kathy. "It's okay, Kathy, I was just having a sentimental moment there."
"He does that sometimes," Jess piped up. She took a look at her watch. "Uh oh, time to go. Zack, you are soooo lucky. Staying in this hospital room, with people to serve you, without any homework." Sticking her tongue out at her older brother, she took Kathy's hand.
"Let's go, Kat," she said, opening the door. "I have to wait here for my parents to come pick me up, but Santan Road is nearer than my house so you can walk home, right? Go ahead, it's okay, I can wait."

Candi opened the door enough so only her head could fit. Seeing Zack's sleeping figure made Candi flush, for reasons she didn't know. Maybe it was the fact it added to his looks, and the part about him looking so peaceful. Lame, but true. She was having an internal battle at the moment, on whether she should just let herself in or go back to her room. No, she'd stay. Candi Ramirez would not back down.
She walked through the door frame and closed it gently, as to not make a single sound. Crossing the room, while not take her eyes off of Zack, she sat down on one of the chairs that lay to the right of the bed.
"I just came in here to say: Thank you so much Zack. I know one thanks may not be enough to fully give you the reward you so rightly deserve for performing a good deed such as this, but that is all I can give you at the moment." Candi muttered, staring into his sleeping face. She shouldn't be nervous, after all he was asleep.
Before she knew it, she continued to speak. "One thing is nagging me in the back of my mind though. Why'd you do it? It's not as if I'm not grateful that you did, I truly am. But we just met this morning. Why would you risk getting hurt if you only knew who I was a couple hours ago?"
Knowing already that Zack wasn't going to answer back she sighed before standing up and walked across the room. "Goodnight." she muttered as she opened the door.

OOC: YEAH! Movie moment! WAKE UP ZACKIE BOY!
"Get out! Get out!" Zack was shouting, a shotgun in his hand and a grenade in the other. He shooed people out of the building, keeping his eyes trained on the aliens pouring out of Briarstone Mall's door. He drew his arm back to throw the hand grenade, and then something dropped on him from behind, snarling and spitting blood--
"...this morning. Why would you risk getting hurt if you only knew who I was a couple hours ago?"
He was about to jump up, shout, sing, dance, but Zack simply had to try and raise his hand to find out how tired he was. His body felt as if it weighed six thousand pounds. And she was leaving. His eyes popped open and an overwhelming desire to kick something flooded his brain, but his voice was calm.
"I don't know..."
It came out as a whisper, but he knew for certain she had been straining her voice for a sound as she began to open the door.
"Because it was... because it was you."

"...Because it was you."
Before Candi stepped out of the room, she heard him answer her. She turned around to find Zack looking right at her. She gasped in surprise and it took her a while before she closed the door softly and walked across the room once again.
Sitting back in the chair she had occupied earlier she gave him a small smile before her expression reverted to one of confusion "But...why? I don't understand." And of all the times her mind had stopped from wondering elsewhere, to figure out the solution, it just had to stop now.

"You know what? Me neither."
He smiled faintly, so sleepy that his eyes were half-open like a drug addict. But he knew he had to stay awake for this even if it killed him.
"But I think if it had been someone else, I would have just gone and called Francis." Looking down and feeling just a tad bit embarrassed--he had always been good at saying what he felt without feeling awkward, unlike Jess--Zack laughed to himself. "But when we fell in the lake, and you only laughed at me...something clicked between us, you know?"
His eyes found hers and held them for a moment before he couldn't resist laughing again. The laugh turned into a cough, and Zack shook his head. "When I saw you and Devon back there in the alley, I thought everything was over. It was as if everything I knew had been erased, and I just had to get him away from you." Okay, so maybe he was being a biiiiiiit too honest. "I mean... not that I'm acting like Spiderman or anything, but I just... had to."

After Zack finished talking silence had greeted them. Candi lay her hand on top of his head gently and bent down to lightly kiss Zack's forehead.
"You really are a sweet guy Zack." she said with a sincere tone in her voice and a soft smile in her features. She stared at him for a while; he looked exhausted "I think you should get back to sleep though, I did come here pretty late. I'll visit you again tomorrow, before I get released from the hospital."
Candi stood up to leave, for the second time that same evening. Giving him one last smiled and saying "Thank you." she opened the door.

Zachariah Alejo had been in a different universe, his body on Earth smiling dreamily from the moment her lips touched his forehead. Dreams spun through his head, replays of what had happened, suggestions for the future.
Then he came back to Briarstone with a bump and realized she was leaving, and he hadn't said the most important thing yet.
"Wait! Candi!" he said, propping himself up into a sitting position on the bed and leaning back against the headboard. He checked the clock on the wall--it was a quarter to 11, and she was still here? She must have been really, really tired... but he had to make sure.

Her head was already light headed, and her body was weighing a ton. The fact that her heart was thumping like crazy didn't help either. She shouldn't have done that, she shouldn't have given him a kiss. That just confirmed what she was afraid would happen to her. Candi already came in too deep when she went past the doorway and across the room.
She thought deep on things, it could benefit you sure; but it also did have its consequences. It makes you think about things that haven't happened to you before, realizing what you should have realized when you've actually experienced it. Making you fear things. In Candi's case, it was heartbrake. She had seen what it could do to people, especially the women, and it scared her.
The brown eyed girl sighed, that didn't mean she had to totally avoid Zack...just not see him as much as she could. But when she was around the guy then she might as well be nice to him. He's sweet and he did save her.
So erasing the exhaustion from her face Candi turned around smiling. "What is it Zack? Something wrong?"

When she came back, and stood there with that smile he had come to memorize inch by inch, Zack found that he couldn't say the 99% of what he really meant, for the first time since he'd got to Briarstone. It had been like this before, with Angela, but...
So he said the 1% that mattered, and hoped she wouldn't think he was just being lame. Hoped she would see through what he was hiding and know what he really meant--that a person just happened to be named Zack Alejo was falling for a certain girl by the name of Candi.
"Candi, I hope you never feel guilty about this." Having said the stupid thing already, Zack rushed on. "I don't care that I'm all bruised and concussioned and God-knows-what-else, I just hope you won't feel guilty. This definitely isn't your fault; I could have just gone and called 9-1-1 or something. You have to promise me you won't blame it on yourself." He looked her straight in the eye, and at that moment, his mind told him she was just there because he was a sweet guy. Kind of makes her sound like my granny.

After Zack voiced out what he thought, Candi bowed her head. She knew it now, it wouldn't work. The man right in front of her, she didn't deserve him. Not a single bit of him. With all the insecurities she had, with all the facade she had conjured throughout her entire life; what Zack probably saw in Candi was his own imagination, his own image of his dream girl. And when she let the whole wall fall, he'd never accept her.
Candi shook her head, unshed tears already appearing as she looked up and faced him "I don't think I'll be able to Zack. As much as anyone will say it isn't my fault...it always will be." she quickly walked out the room and shut the door, leaning against it. Putting her hand over her heart she squeezed it tightly.
It hurt, it hurt so d*mn much. To see the look in someone's eyes, to listen to what he had to say and know what he actually meant. When he said things weren't her fault she knew what he meant to really say to her, and by using the same tactic she gave him a reply. That no matter what, it just wasn't possible. And as much as Candi hated to admit it, she was running away.
She slowly walked back to her room, each step as heavy as the last, her eyes drooping slowly down. When she finally got to her bed, she slumped into the matress and immediately fell asleep.

He watched her go, letting his guard down once the door was firmly shut behind him. Turning to where the hospital window was, its curtains drawn back to reveal the night sky, Zack wondered if he had been too open, once again. Jess had once told him about a guy who kept shoving it in her face that he liked her, and finally Zack's sister had just told the guy to shut up... Laughing slightly to himself at the image of Jess saying that to some poor innocent kid, Zack drifted off to sleep, this time so deeply that he had no dreams.
